Identity Protection is Easier than You Think
It does not take much information for a thief to successfully impersonate you once they have stolen your identity. In some cases, all a thief needs to know is your name, account number and PIN number in order to be able to use your debit or ATM card. This information may be easier to get than you may think, but if you are aware of your surroundings and your actions, you can prevent identity theft and keep your information safe.
One of the first and foremost things you should do to prevent identity theft is to be aware of your surroundings. This may sound simple, and is a good piece of advice for any situation, but many people still become so engrossed in their own thoughts and tasks that they fail to properly pay attention to those around them. Thieves will wait near an ATM until an unsuspecting victim approaches the machine. Then the thief will get close enough to see the PIN number that is entered, without being detected.
Once they have your PIN number, there is a myriad of ways they can get your account number. Some will lift it off of internet transactions or write it down when you take it out at a store to complete a transaction. They will obtain your name in the same way, and once they have gathered all three pieces of information they now have the ability to use your card to make large online purchases.
Watching who is around you is imperative to preventing your information from being stolen. Simply being aware of who is watching you will key you in on when it is safe to make a transaction and when it is unsafe. When at ATMs, always stand in front of the ATM so that your balance, card number, name, and PIN number cannot be seen by prying eyes.
